Snaking versus jetting, plainly

A drain cable is the right first move for a simple blockage: it reaches the mass, chews an opening, and flow resumes. What it leaves behind is everything clinging to the pipe walls — the grease layer, the soap sludge, the root fringe — which is why some lines clog again on a schedule. Jetting sends water at pressures that strip the pipe back to bare wall and flush the debris downstream. For a line that backs up every few months, that difference is the whole point.

What jetting clears that cables cannot

Grease is the classic case: kitchens feed it to the line for years until the pipe narrows like a hardened artery, and a cable hole through it lasts weeks at best. Roots are the other — in the county's older neighborhoods, clay and cast-iron laterals invite fine root mats at every joint, and jetting shears them flush where a blade leaves stubble. Sand and silt that settle in long, flat runs rinse out the same way.

Camera first, water second

Pressure that cleans a sound pipe can worsen a broken one, so a responsible jetting job starts with a camera pass. If the line shows a collapsed section, a major offset, or pipe walls too far gone, jetting is the wrong spend and the crew should say so — the money belongs in the repair instead. When the camera shows buildup in an intact line, jetting restores it to nearly new capacity without a shovel touching the yard.

Maintenance jetting for problem lines

Restaurants know this rhythm already; some houses need it too. A line with heavy tree cover or a long flat run to the street can be jetted on a schedule — yearly or better — for less than the cost of the emergency it prevents. If the same drain has been snaked three times in two years, it is telling you which service it actually needs.

Same clog keeps coming back? Clean the whole pipe this time.
