On ground this low and wet, the pump in the pit is quiet insurance. The time to find out it works is before the June rains, not during them.

With the water table sitting close under much of Jackson County, crawlspaces and low additions collect water any month a tropical system parks offshore. A working pump keeps that water moving out before it becomes mold, rot, and a foundation problem; a failed one announces itself only after the damage starts. The failure is rarely dramatic — a float switch stuck against the pit wall, a check valve letting water fall back, an impeller bound with sediment — and all of it is findable in a short service visit.
Twice a year, pour a bucket of water into the pit and watch: the float should rise, the pump should start promptly, the water should leave, and the pump should shut off without short-cycling. Anything else — hesitation, rattling, running on after the pit empties, or a discharge line that dribbles back — is a repair call worth making in dry weather at dry-weather prices.
The storm that fills your pit is the same one that drops your power, which is why a pump without a backup plan is only half a system. A battery-backup pump rides through an outage measured in hours; a water-powered backup, where pressure allows, rides through longer ones; and a generator-fed circuit covers everything if it is wired before the season. Which answer fits depends on your pit, your panel, and your tolerance for risk — a conversation worth having once, properly.
Switches, check valves, and clogged intakes are repairs. A motor past its expected years, a pump that has already flooded once, or a pit that fills faster than the unit can empty it are replacement territory — sometimes with a higher-capacity unit or a second pump staged above the first. The right call comes from watching the pit work, not from a catalog.
